The standard of media and journalism education in the Pacific will be among the issues addressed at a global journalism conference opening in Auckland today.

More than 220 journalism educators and journalists representing 43 different countries will be participating in the 4th World Journalism Education Congress.


Cook Islander awarded Fulbright

The Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer's Residency at the University of Hawaii has been awarded to a Cook Islands artist for the first time.

Miria George is a poet, and writer for theatre, radio and television. An award-winning playwright, her work has toured New Zealand, Australia, Hawai'i, Canada and the United Kingdom.


Sport: Solomons spending big to prepare for the Futsal World Cup

The Solomon Islands are spending big to ensure the national futsal team arrives at the World Cup in Colombia as the best prepared Kurukuru team ever.

The Solomon Islands retained their Oceania title in February to qualify for a third straight World Cup appearance in September.


Siblings set to rule the roost in Rio

It will be a family affair for two sets of siblings named in the men's and women's rugby sevens teams to represent New Zealand at the Rio Olympics next month.

Sonny Bill Williams has been named in the men's squad while his sister Niall will play in the women's team.

Also named in the men's squad are Akira and Rieko Ioane who play for the Blues in the Super Rugby competition.


Sport: Fiji PM calls for more Super Rugby

Fiji's Prime Minister has put his hand up for the country to be given another opportunity to host a Super rugby game.

Frank Bainimarama's comments come after his country hosted the first Super rugby fixture in the Pacific last night, with the Chiefs defeating the Crusaders 23-13 at the ANZ stadium in Suva.

Mr Bainimarama expressed pride at having hosted the clash between what he called such 'impressive teams'.


American Samoa looks at possible Air Tahiti Nui deal

A high-level American Samoa delegation is in French Polynesia to hold talks on airline links, aquaculture and climate change.

Lieutenant Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga and the governor's executive assistant Iulogologo Joseph Pereira are attending the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program meeting, which is looking at the environment and protection of ocean resources.
