Tonga's Princess takes the lead on Covid-19 vaccination

Tonga's Princess Pilolevu Tuita was the first person to receive her first dose of the Covid-19 AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine, followed by frontline workers on Tongatapu.

The Princess volunteered to take part along with her husband Lord Tuita and Prime Minister Dr Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa.

Acting CEO for Health Dr Reynold 'Ofanoa also received his first shot.


Tonga's Covid-19 vaccination programme rolls out this week

Tonga's Covid-19 vaccination programme starts this Thursday on the main island, Tongatapu.

The Minister of Health Dr 'Amelia Tu'ipulotu told Matangi Tonga that frontline workers will be the first to receive their shots at Falemasiva Hall.

The Ministry of Health has held a national campaign on radio and television to inform the public about the vaccine and its roll-out since the first 24,000 doses of the Covid-19 AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccines arrived on March 31.


Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, dies aged 99

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh has died at the age of 99.

Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he "inspired the lives of countless young people".


Minister urges caution as Pasifika Festival returns

Organisers of the Pasifika Festival are expecting thousands of people to celebrate its return in Tāmaki Makaurau/ Auckland this morning.

Cancelled for the past two years, due to the Christchurch terror attacks and the Covid-19 pandemic, the two-day festival will be held at a new venue, Mt Smart Stadium. Previously it was held at Western Springs.


Pasifika TV director Caren Rangi ONZM, appointed as Chair of the Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa

Creative New Zealand recently announced that Caren Rangi ONZM has been appointed as the new Chair of the Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa.

Ms Rangi will be the first Pacific Chair and third woman to hold this role of Chair of the Arts Council in its 55-year history.

She is a founding director on the Pacific Cooperation Broadcasting Limited (PCBL) board, following our establishment in 2015.


Pacific Super Rugby teams could be just weeks away

The Fijian Drua and Moana Pasifika could be confirmed as the newest Super Rugby teams within a "couple of weeks" after a further funding boost from World Rugby.

The governing body has agreed to spend more than $NZ7 million over the next three years to support the establishment of two new Pacific Island Super Rugby teams.
