Fiji win seen as gold for tourism

Patricia Mallam who was monitoring social media during the Fiji game said the word 'Fiji' topped Google searches within half an hour of the win.

She said a lot of people would have been driven to the official Tourism Fiji website and traffic can be converted into marketing campaigns capitalising on the win.

Ms Mallam said the way the Fijian sevens team received and celebrated their gold medal was also great for the country.

"Is the airport open today?" a traveller asked outside Nadi Airport.

Of course the airport was open - but whether anyone was working was another matter.

Fiji beat NZ to reach Olympic 7s semis

Fiji have beaten New Zealand 12-7 to advance to the semi finals of the Olympic men's sevens tournament, ending the All Blacks Sevens hopes of a medal.

The World Series champions opened the scoring with a try to skipper Osea Kolinisau in the second minute of the match in wet conditions at the Deodoro Stadium.

More Pacific nations begin Rio campaign

The Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands and American Samoa all began competition at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday.

Marshall Islands weightlifter Mattie Sasser finished in 11th place in the women's 58kg division with a combined lift of 199kg, while Jenlyn Wini from Solomon Islands was 15th after lifting 188kg.

Lifters from Thailand claimed both the gold and silver medals.

It's always a bit of a sport with the media, seeing how many potential problems they can expose before each Olympic Games, but I've never known anything like what's gone on in the lead-up to the Rio de Janeiro Games.

Brazil is in the midst of political turmoil, with its President, Dilma Rousseff, having been impeached. More locally, the mayor of Rio has said his city faces bankruptcy because of the Olympics.

Vicki Wilson is already learning on the job after being appointed Fiji netball coach through to the 2019 World Cup.

The former Australian Diamonds captain filled the vacancy left by New Zealander Kate Carpenter, who quit as Pearls coach in December after 15 months in charge.
