Marae Moana was legally designated on 12th July 2017 by the Marae Moana Act 2017 which has the primary purpose of protecting and conserving the” ecological, biodiversity and heritage values of the Cook Islands marine environment. Edited highlights of the handover ceremony held in the Cook Islands. A tivaevae signifying  Marae Moana and the blending of the old wisdom and new technology was  passed from indigenous leadership to Prime Minister Henry Puna, and now to  incumbent Prime minister Mark Brown.
